What makes a top quality CBD oil?
Whole Plant Extraction
It is of major importance that the whole plant is used when extracting CBD. Whole plant extractions typically include CBD, THC, and more than 400 trace compounds. Many of these compounds interact synergistically to create what scientists refer to as an “entourage effect” that increases the therapeutic benefits of the plant’s individual components so that the overall medicinal impact of the finished product is greater than the sum of its parts.

Supercritical CO2 Extraction
Supercritical CO2 Extraction is the best of the best. However setting up a C02 extraction plant requires millions of pounds of investment, because of this only the largest and most sophisticated growers have these facilities. So you, as the buyer, can be assured if C02 extraction has been used, the product you are buying has come from a reputable supplier. Using carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction to separate CBD from the whole plant requires highly-specialised equipment. CO2 takes many forms, depending on temperature and other factors. In order to use it for extraction, it has to be transformed into its liquid state at temperatures below -69°F. At the same time, the pressure must be raised to over 75 pounds per square inch using a compressor, before it is passed through the plant material. As you may imagine this is not a process that can be performed without highly-specialised equipment.
This process is ideal for ensuring that the product is not damaged nor its natural components corrupted in any way. Remember that when humans breathe in oxygen, they breathe out CO2 which plants convert into oxygen. So this process involves using something absolutely natural to the human body.

Broad Spectrum CBD, or Full Spectrum
Broad spectrum and full spectrum CBD are considered to be the best products available, they both contain an array of cannabinoids and terpenes and those all important trace compounds that create the “entourage effect”. The difference between broad and Full spectrum is that Broad spectrum has no traces of THC whilst Full Spectrum does. Although the amounts of THC in Full Spectrum are never more than 0.3% (a legal requirement) it is still enough for somebody who has ingested it to fail a drug test.
Broad Spectrum CBD has all of those important cannabinoids, terpenes and other trace compounds required without the THC. To create Broad Spectrum CBD, manufacturers put their products through additional processing to isolate and remove all trace amounts of THC whilst preserving the other natural cannabinoids and terpenes. Broad Spectrum CBD is an excellent choice for individuals that can’t have any traces of THC in their system, whether for medical, personal or legal reasons.

Although we would never use CBD Isolate it is worth mentioning it here, as you may well come across it when deciding what CBD you will buy. CBD Isolate is CBD isolated from all other cannabinoids. During the CBD isolate extraction process, everything contained in the plant matter is removed, including any traces of THC, terpenes, other cannabinoids, waxes, oils, chlorophyll and more. Which in our opinion leaves the finished product much less likely to benefit from the “entourage effect” and less likely to be as medicinally potent as Broad Spectrum CBD Oils.
Know the provenance of the CBD you are buying
We have only discussed the best extraction method. There are many other extraction methods that in our opinion aren’t so good. Many of these are on the internet for people to use at home, some of these are harmless and others are positively dangerous. Also, you can actually buy CBD in crystal form from places like China, this product is very cheap, of dubious origins and may in some cases be synthetic (synthetic CBD is normally used in lab tests on rats). The unscrupulous use these crystals to mix with any available cheap oils and then sell it on the internet as quality CBD oil. So the provenance of the oil you are buying is of paramount importance. Only ever buy from a UK provider you can trust.
